Released in 2013 in 767 pieces, the Wasp Modern DeLuxe is a wonderful statue dedicated to the alter-ego of the beautiful Janet Van Dyne, the wife of Ant-Man and a founding member of the Avengers. The character represents one of the (few) female figures of a certain weight appearing in the Silver Age (the first appearance dates back to 1963) and, in addition to the classic heroine role, she played the diplomatic and often difficult role of "peacemaker" among the sharp and strong personalities of the other heroes. Equipped with the ability to take the size of a wasp (thanks to the serum of her husband), to fly and also to give off electric shock, Wasp is the true forerunner of the many, aggressive and sensual heroines of the Marvel world and yet another example of the intuition of Stan Lee, his ability to meet the tastes of the teenagers by projecting his fantastic heroes in the everyday life. Within the chaste and masculine world of superheroes of 60s, in fact, the seductive womanliness of Janet and her allusions (more or less explicit) to the attractiveness of its muscular partners (Thor, in particular) enriched the plots of a just outlined and sexy romanticism, as real as chaste and appreciated by the readers of the time. In my opinion, this sttaue represents one of the best statues of Bowen's last production. Thanks to the re-proposal of the amazing features of the Ant-Man DeLuxe (a sequence of three similar figures and the transparency effects aimed at simulating the dimensional mutation of the heroine), the piece can count on a top-class aesthetic impact and constitutes, with the other DeLuxe twin, a couple of a really extraordinary charm. Wasp exhibits the stunning body of a pin-up, with extremely sinuous and sexy appearance and two very elongated and transparent wings, embellished with numerous veins in relief. The costume consists of a form-fitting black suit enriched by a flashy gold-colored insert applied on the breast and abdomen and consisting of regular geometric shapes, stylized in order to remember the insect from which the heroine takes her name. The face is colored in an masterful way: blue eyes, bobbed hair (very well sculpted, even on the smaller figures) and red lips, with superb shades on eyes and cheeks, as to emphasize the perfect make-up of Janet. The base is a classic one, often adopted by Bowen for many members of the Avengers (like Captain America or Hawkeye): cylindrical in shape, with a metallic semblance and a large, engraved "A" centered in the midst of other geometric shapes. Due to the striking design, the excellent manufacturing quality and the remarkable aesthetics, I believe this piece is a top-class collectible and a true must-have, especially if you are one of the lucky owners of the Ant-Man DeLuxe.
